SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

January 16, 2011

Jesus is clearly revealed as the Son of God.  He fulfills the highest hopes of the Old Covenant and satisfies the deepest longings of those who continually search for God.  In Jesus, we find both grace and goodness for the living of our lives.  In him, we are kept firm and faultless, and in perfect fellowship.  Who could he be, but the Son of God?

As we worship today, let us be reminded that the Holy Spirit has called us here in the worship of our Lord.  Now, ask yourself, “Why am I here?”

Congratulations to Charles Crawford on his recent Retirement.  May God bless you with health, strength and continued trust in Him to enjoy this new phase of your life.

Gwen Walton-Cox continues to recuperate from her car accident.  She is in rehab at Miami Valley Hospital.  Her spirits are good.  Your continued prayers are still needed.

As we begin this new year of 2011, let us pray for the church, that it might stand as God intended, as an example and a help to the world; let us pray for our country and its leaders that they may make decisions based on humanity to man and not with greed or selfishness; and let us pray for our young people that they may have a future with all the hope and blessings God intended.  In 2011, may we allow the Holy Spirit to lead us!

SPECIAL REQUEST:  As our congregation grows older, and members we once counted on to do “everything” are no longer able to serve, please open yourselves to the possibility of stepping in and stepping up to one or more of the many ministries and activities we have at New Hope.  The need is great.  The laborers are few.  Let Christ work through you.

FOOD for THOUGHT:

Following Jesus is a lifelong journey.   It begins at our baptism (or arguably before that) and continues beyond death.   When Jesus asks the disciples, "What are you looking for?" we must ask ourselves the same question when we choose to follow Jesus.   What is it that we are looking for?  Eternal life?  Forgiveness?  Love?  Understanding?

I have had many conversations with people for whom calling themselves Christian means they are going to heaven, and that is the most important thing for them.   That Jesus died on the cross so they can go to heaven.  While Jesus does speak of eternal life (and John's Gospel seems to stress it more than the others), Jesus speaks much more about how we ought to live in this lifetime: to love our neighbors as ourselves, to care for the poor, to visit the imprisoned, to welcome the outcast, to forgive others and seek forgiveness ourselves.   Jesus does not give a simple answer to the disciples when they say, "Where are you staying?"  He replies, "Come and see."  If we want to really know Jesus, we must "come and see."  We must go and witness to what Christ has done in the world: loving others and showing compassion, caring for the sick, doing what we can to lift up the poor and oppressed and sharing the good news of God's love in Jesus Christ.   If we do those things, we need not worry about the question of heaven, for we know God here and now and we know that God's love continues beyond death.   We need to understand the fullness of Christ's life, death and resurrection--not just one part, which all too often many of us focus on.   What are you looking for?  There is so much more to the Christian life.   Come and see.

Martin Luther King, Jr.  embodied this message in his life and ministry, in his witness, even in his death.   We celebrate his life this weekend and we are reminded that the Christian life is not an easy one.   We are reminded of all the "saints" of recent memory who have lived out the Christian faith in ways that are difficult for many of us.   None of them are perfect, but they all embrace the teachings of Jesus on earth.   The Christian life is rich in its diversity, rich in the ways it is lived out, and we give thanks for Martin Luther King, Jr., and his willingness to live his life in a way that embraced all people, and called for peaceful action and responses against injustice.   What are you looking for?  Look at Martin Luther King, Jr.   Look at Rosa Parks.   Look at Mother Teresa.   Look at so many who have lived their lives in bold ways for others.   Come on the Christian journey and see for yourself.
